Qatar suspends maritime activities as US-Iran conflict escalates across Gulf
Commercial international vessels remain exempt from restrictions
DOHA – Qatar has temporarily suspended most maritime activities across the country amid rapidly escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, introducing precautionary measures to safeguard public safety.
The restrictions came as military exchanges between Washington and Tehran heightened security concerns across the Gulf region. At the same time, Doha strongly condemned Iran's reported attack, describing it as a violation of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
Maritime curbs
The Qatari Ministry of Transport announced that the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice. The ministry said the decision was taken in coordination with relevant security authorities and urged all citizens and maritime users to comply with the latest instructions.

According to the ministry, owners and users of leisure boats, fishing vessels, jet skis and other small maritime craft have been instructed to halt all sailing and maritime activities until further notice.
Authorities clarified that commercial and international vessels operating under international maritime conventions and in accordance with established regulations are exempt from the restrictions and may continue their operations.
The ministry also urged residents and vessel owners to rely solely on official sources for updates regarding any changes to the security situation or maritime regulations.
Alongside the maritime restrictions, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement condemning Iran's reported attack. The ministry described the action as a blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
According to the statement, the Iranian action threatens regional peace and stability and risks further escalating an already volatile security environment. Qatar said Iran bears full responsibility for the consequences arising from the attack.
The foreign ministry also stated that Qatar reserves the right to take appropriate measures to protect its national interests and security in accordance with international law. At the same time, Doha renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation and the resumption of diplomatic dialogue to prevent further instability across the region.
US-Iran tensions
The latest developments followed a sharp escalation in hostilities between the US and Iran. Tehran said it had launched attacks on US military sites in several regional countries in retaliation for American strikes on Iranian targets.
The announcement came after the US military's Central Command said it had struck around 140 targets inside Iran following another Iranian attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
Political analysts say the renewed confrontation has intensified concerns over maritime security, energy supplies and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important waterways. Gulf states have responded by strengthening precautionary measures as the security situation continues to evolve.
